“Not all those who wander are lost.”  – J.R.R. Tolkien, Lord of the Rings:  The Fellowship of the Ring

Making the decision to go to therapy is often a big and scary one. As therapists we listen to details about the lives of our clients. We hear about things that people hold close and don’t like to reveal about themselves. The thought of opening up like this is frequently intimidating. So, congratulations on taking that first step! Next step is to find a great therapist, not just any therapist. Here’s where I tell you a little about myself to show you how I am a great therapist.

I am a pretty laid-back and calm person, and I’ve been told I have a good poker face. I’m more comfortable listening to people than I am jumping right into a conversation, unless we stumble upon one of my geek-out topics…more on that later. I am not the type to bust out psychobabble and award-winning Scrabble words in therapy. I prefer to break things down into more personal terms that have meaning in your life.

The clients I work best with are – and stop me if you’ve heard this before -the people who want to be there. I am totally willing to build rapport and trust but would rather we not exhaust ourselves by trying to break down walls intended to keep me at arm’s length. I work hard at not wasting time because I know it’s important for clients to start feeling improvement as soon as possible. Therapy is hard work, where we will delve into vulnerable, personal topics that aren’t fun or easy. When clients want to be there and do the work, this is where I work best.

It’s important to note that I am not going to try to ‘fix’ you. No one comes into my office ‘broken’ even if there are people who treat you like you are. My clients are in charge of their lives, and they come to me for help in managing and solving some things. YOU are the expert in your life, I am the expert in providing therapy. I create a safe space for clients to be heard and supported while gaining tools to help get over whatever obstacles they are facing. I’m like a golfer’s caddy. I carry the clubs, make recommendations, and support the golfer as they ultimately take the shot.

More about me…

In case you haven’t guessed, I use puns, analogies and am a huge geek. Star Trek, Star Wars, Marvel, D&D… that’s my jam. I play video games, watch tons of geeky TV and movies, and use these to connect with clients and help them apply new concepts or coping skills. I mean, who needs anger management classes more than the Hulk? He’s the poster child for anger issues, but he eventually learns to express his anger in a healthier way to become a better blend of intelligence and strength. Whether it’s learning executive functioning skills through playing video games or discussing emotions using Pixar movies, if you want to relate something to me using geeky or pop culture references, I am here for it!

Some more technical details about me:

  • I have a Bachelor’s Degree in English from Kenyon College in Ohio, a Master’s Degree in English from Saint Louis University, and my Master’s in Social Work from the University of Southern California
  • I am a Licensed Mental Health Practitioner (License #6166) and Master Social Worker (#2396) in Nebraska
  • I am under supervision of Corina Maher (LIMHP, CPC, LMHC, RPT), license # 2385 and Megan Judy (MSW, LCSW, LIMHP, CMSW). If you have any questions about this process, you can contact them directly at corina.maher@unityyfs.com or megan.judy@unityyfs.com with any questions or concerns
  • I am trauma-informed, trained in EMDR and PCIT, and a Certified Geek Therapist
