I am a black belt in the art of reading a room.

That is to say, nothing gets past me. I am extremely perceptive and intuitive. I have been blessed (or cursed!) with the ability to easily and accurately interpret facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice, and this has been key to my ability to understand and work effectively with my clients.

Reading between the lines is my specialty, as often it is what is not explicitly stated that carries the most meaning. I’m all heart, and I bring a lot of heart to my sessions as well as plenty of humor, some occasional colorful language, and a straightforward approach my clients appreciate.

I am most effective when I am partnered with clients who are committed to the process and ready to take the leap. I ask a lot of my clients, expecting them to be vulnerable, engaged, and willing to hear honest insights delivered with kindness. I won’t ever tell my clients therapy is an easy process, but if you are you ready to dig deep, you can expect transformative change. I do this work while bringing a sense of calm and direction to what may currently feel like chaos and turmoil in your life.

How do I do it?

I see things through a “person-in-environment” lens. We are all affected by the other people and systems we interact with. I believe our behavior cannot be fully understood without looking at our environment, including our past environment. No individual exists in isolation and we are all products of our own unique experiences. When working with you, I consider how your experiences and your environment may be impacting your functioning and behavior. I also rely on identifying your strengths to inform and guide change.

By working with me, you can expect to:

  • Set and work toward your stated goals
  • Understand yourself and the world around you better
  • Gain insight into your childhood and how it shaped who you are today
  • Improve your overall functioning
  • Enhance your relationships
  • Develop healthy boundaries
  • Better manage your emotions and reactions
  • Enjoy greater stability in your life

“I don’t tell you what to see. I shine a light and show you where to look.”

Now on to the important stuff – YOU! (or, my scope of practice)

I work with adults with a variety of symptoms and diagnoses, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and PTSD.

I have a particular interest in working with individuals who are experiencing grief and loss. Processing the feelings associated with death and giving yourself the grace and space to grieve are necessary parts of the healing process. Grieving and bereavement can also apply to nontraditional loss like pet loss, divorce, financial loss, job loss, retirement, injury and loss of physical capabilities, illness, moving homes, and empty nest syndrome. All of these shifts in life can impact a person’s functioning and sense of stability, and I am ready to help you manage these times of transition and change.

I also work with adult children who are struggling with feelings of disconnection and/or estrangement from their family of origin. Sometimes the reason is clear, and sometimes it’s just a nagging feeling that something isn’t quite right. Maybe in the past you’ve spoken up about these feelings only to be dismissed or invalidated. You might feel like the “crazy” one in your family and maybe you’ve even been told that. Let me assure you – you are not “crazy.” In fact, the client in my office for therapy is oftentimes the healthiest person within a family system. Acknowledging these feelings can be scary and asking for help to figure it all out takes self–awareness, insight, and courage. Collaboratively with my clients, we peel back the layers and discover together the root causes of these feelings of disconnection, distress, and confusion that can lie within families.

Sometimes people feel the need to seek therapy because those around them won’t. In this way, I also have an interest in working with clients who have been impacted by parents and partners with personality disorders and difficult behaviors. These diagnoses and the associated behaviors can be extremely taxing and destabilizing to the people around the person with the diagnosis. With me, clients confronting these interpersonal difficulties experience a safe environment in which to process their feelings, gain a sense of clarity around these behaviors and their causes, and develop coping strategies to help maintain equilibrium as they face the challenging dynamics within these relationships.
